Sister Nuala Visits our School
Sister Nuala visited our school and talked to all the classes from 3rd -6th. She worked in India on the missions for 27 years. She told us about India. She showed us photographs of the children in India. The population of India is over 80 million. A lot of the people there are very poor. Some of the children have to look after sheep up in the mountains. Some children don’t get to go to school and then find it very hard to get a job. We realised how lucky we are when we heard the stories about life for the children in India from Sister Nuala.

Sonic the Hedgehog comes to School!
Cormac McAvinney had a great surprise when a little hedgehog visited their garden last night. They named him “Sonic” a popular cartoon character name. They have described him as a dark brown colour with little brown eyes. They fed him a red apple and soon he soon slept in his little open box. They continued to check on Sonic because the little hedgehog did not like the light on his face.Cormac brought the hedgehog to school to show all his friends and teachers and they too loved the little hedgehog!

Thanks to Josie Mc Entee, Bernie White, Nuala Shekleton and Mickey Carolan and John Mc Entee for all their dedication to our school over the summer. Their work is very much appreciated.
We would ask parents to use to Kells entrance to the school when dropping and collecting their children. Please take care when entering and exiting the set down and be watchful of other children. Education Welfare Act 2000
This act obliges our school to report any pupil who is absent for in excess of 20 days within the school year to the Welfare Officer. It is necessary for parents/ guardians to send a letter of explanation to the school for all absentee pupils. You may use the “Letter of absence” slip available in the back of your child’s School Homework Diary, which is available from the school at a cost of €2.50.
If your child needs to leave the school before closing time, the school must receive notification in writing from the parent/ guardian. Check out the “Permission to leave slip” at the back of the School Homework Diary. Any pupil leaving the school before closing time, must be signed out at the office by a parent/ guardian in the “Home Book”. We have noticed that many pupils were taken out of school at the end of the year for holidays. We would appeal to parents not to book holidays during the school year as your child is missing out on their educational development.
Pupil Personal Accident Insurance
If you wish to avail of this insurance please fill in the application form and return it to the school along with the premium by Friday 22nd of September 2012. If you are claiming on the above policy you may obtain a form from the school office. During the holidays please contact Allianz directly at:
Allianz PLC ., Burlington House, Burlington Road, Dublin 4 .
Ph : 01 6133900 quoting the policy no: DKRPA2754242
Opening and Closing time for school
The Board of Management wishes to state that school commences at 9.20 a.m. daily. The school will open daily from 9.10 a.m. to facilitate the dropping off of children. The infants finish school at 2p.m. The collection area for Junior and Senior Infants is at the fire exit doors of their respective classrooms. The new Junior Infants pupils will finish at 12.20 p.m. for the first two weeks of the new school year. School will finish for all infants at 2 p.m. from Monday 17th September. School finishes at 3 p.m. for all other pupils. We would ask parents to ensure their children are left to school on time as late arrivals can cause a lot of disruption for the class.
Child Protection Guidelines
The Department of Education and Science has introduced Guidelines and Procedures for all schools in relation to Child Protection and Welfare. These guidelines promote the welfare of all pupils. The Board of Management of St. Joseph’s National School has adopted these guidelines as school policy. Consequently if there is any matter of concern in relation to abuse of children, we are obliged to report this to the Local Health Authority. They will assess the case and provide the necessary support to the child concerned.
Healthy Lunch Policy
We would appeal to all parents and guardians to co-operate with our Healthy Lunch Policy for the benefit of all our pupils. A reusable beaker is recommended for your child’s drink and lunch box. Please remember to label lunch boxes and beakers.
